HULA GIRL QUILTS is
an idea that developed out of a need for peace, calm and optimism in the
midst of a tumultuous time in my life. I was looking for a creative project
that was positive and life affirming at that point, and eventually decided
to make a hand pieced patchwork quilt to be given as a gift to myself
and my future husband, Michael when we wed the following summer. It was
a truly cleansing experience that opened up an entire new world for me.
An interesting combination
of factors led to my love affair with Hawaiian quilts, which began soon
after. I had long driven various friends and aquaintances crazy playing
old 78 rpm Hawaiian records full blast on my Victrola gramophone ("My
Little Grass Shack in Kealakekua, Hawaii" being among my favorites).
This same penchant inspired my first present to Michael when we started
dating: a framed piece of sheet music published in 1924, "Hula Hula
Dream Girl"!

So when the bold, contrasting
colors and beautiful designs of Hawaiian quilts came to my attention,
they struck a chord within my creative self on many levels. I was instantly
reminded of the doodlings and cutouts I used to make spontaneously as
a child, and of the flower wreaths that were such a pleasant part of my
Latvian upbringing:
